The poetry of Harris B. Stewart, Jr. - Books illustrated by J. C.Holden
Dr. Stewart was chief oceanographer for the Coast and Geodetic Survey in the early 1960s and hired Bob Dietz who, in turn, hired me. Stewart, along with being an able scientist and administrator, was also a compulsive poetaster in the tradition of Ogden Nash. When "Stew" discovered that I could cartoon, he routed some of his doggerel my way (We had become NOAA by then) and asked if I might think of any appropriate cartoons. The result was a little hardbacked book entitled The Id of the Squid and Other Outrageous Rhymes About Oceanography published by Compass Publ. (1970).
After I left NOAA, and Stew retired from his oceanographic duties, we continued to collabrate. For every gut-wrenching piece of doggerel that Stew produced, I prided myself on being able to grind out a inspirational cartoon to augment it. The results are as follows:
